Sivantos incorporated machine learning into hearing aids as early as 2006 with the Centra hearing aid model. Over time, this model was programmed to learn its users’ preferences and tailor the default gain to these behaviors. The gain could still be changed by the wearer, but the hearing aid was designed to orient itself naturally.
Then, in 2017 Sivantos engineers added an entirely new feature. Since many people with hearing loss cite the artificial sound of their own voice as a downside to using hearing aids, the engineers developed OVP for a more natural-sounding own voice. The artificial intelligence involved in OVP “learns” the wearer’s voice. While machine learning in previous hearing aid models could take weeks, the voice recognition program in OVP takes only seconds.
